Is CBD Safe for Children and Pets?

CBD for Children and Pets

CBD (short for cannabidiol) has taken the wellness world by storm and is capable of alleviating the symptoms behind a wide array of conditions. However, health issues also affect children and pets. Is it safe for them to use CBD therapy?

The short answer here is yes, absolutely! CBD presents no risks of dependence, abuse, or any other adverse health effects that are common in many pharmaceutical drugs. Regardless of your weight, age, or body type, CBD presents a safer alternative to many of these drugs.

CBD has no psychoactive effects, which should give parents or pet-owners even less pause about allowing their children or animals to use CBD products.

If you are new to CBD, you probably have more questions about administering CBD to your child or furry friend. That’s why we’ve compiled this comprehensive guide on everything you need to know regarding how CBD can be used for children and pets.

How CBD Works

CBD is one of many chemical compounds found naturally in the hemp plant. When consumed, these cannabinoids stimulate a network of neurotransmitters found naturally in the body, known as the endocannabinoid system. Responsible for regulating and modulating numerous vital body functions, the ECS (when pushed to its fullest capabilities) will help push states of instability and unbalance closer toward equilibrium.

More specifically, CBD has been to shown to possess natural anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and analgesic pain-relieving properties, and it is also an effective treatment for anxiety and depression. To reiterate the above, it is non-psychoactive and presents no risk of addiction or dependence.

CBD for Children

CBD is safe for children, but how effective is it? First of all, if you still reserve personal doubts about CBD’s safety at this point, know that there are authorities as high as the World Health Organization who attest to its safety. Second, some of the most seminal research studies and trials on CBD have been performed in the context of pediatric care, illuminating profound treatment results for insomnia, anxiety, severe seizure disorders, and more.

Out of all conditions, there is perhaps the strongest evidence that CBD can be effective for seizures and epilepsy, so much so that the FDA approved the world’s first prescribable CBD medication for them.

In one CBD study conducted on 120 children with a particularly brutal seizure disorder known as Dravet, 43% of them exhibited a remarkable 50%+ reduction in drug-resistant seizures. In addition to aiding the treatment of seizures and generalized anxiety, there’s also evidence that CBD can improve anxiety and other symptoms in severely autistic children. An Israeli study demonstrated an incredible 80% success rate in children with autism.

Since CBD has no known risk of overdose or tolerance, people can experiment with lower or higher dosages as needed. More evidence and studies are needed, but early signs suggest that CBD may also be an effective reliever of pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) due to its anti-inflammatory properties.

CBD for Pets

It’s well established that CBD can be a safe, useful, and effective way to promote wellness in dogs and other animals, but pet owners may still be wondering how it helps. All living, breathing animals possess a working endocannabinoid system, so it’s no wonder that many recent CBD tests have been integrating animal and human models into their research. In some instances, these animal model results have been even more effective than human models, with one Colorado State University trial showcasing an 80% seizure reduction in dogs.

Given that pets have shorter lifespans than humans, they also develop signs of aging faster than we do. While it hasn’t been shown to lengthen your pets life, CBD certainly shows potential to improve a pet’s quality of life, with one Cornell study observing significant pain reduction in 80% of the dog’s studied. There is evidence that CBD can help calm dogs and cats. All in all, if your pet suffers from anxiety or any sort of pain, treat them with CBD.

There are no risks in taking CBD, but you should verify the reliability and safety of CBD products before you buy. CBD can interfere with the liver enzymes that metabolize many prescription medications. Depending on what your child or pet may be currently taking, you may want to consult a general healthcare professional or veterinarian before trying CBD.

  • Super informative post.. I have been giving my 11yr old son TruCure 500mg CBD Oil for a few months now. He has been on so many prescription pills for ADHD and has bad anxiety. This oil has helped get him off the prescription pills and his anxiety is pretty much inexistent. Such an amazing product and love that this company is such a purist and so informative.
