Treating ADHD with CBD

Attention deficit, hyperactivity disorder is a common and misunderstood affliction, throwing off your ability to focus on school, work, relationships, and even simple, routine day-to-day tasks.

Though it can affect people of all ages, it most commonly affects children and teens. Over 6 million of them are estimated to suffer from it according to the Center for Disease Control. On average, 2 out of 3 of those affected also suffered from another mental, emotional, or behavioral disorder.

There are no known cures for ADHD, but measures can be taken to mitigate the severity of its symptoms. According to the above CDC research, approximately 77% of minors suffering from ADHD receive treatment on average. Of those minors, 62% were taking pharmaceutical medication for their ADHD.  The good news is that 70-80% of those on these medications help reduce symptoms. The bad news is that long-term use of common stimulant drugs has been linked to an increased risk of nausea, stunted growth, and a myriad of cardiovascular problems.

It’s great that those with ADHD don’t have to let their diagnosis define their lives, but the treatment of something that takes a toll shouldn’t take a toll in itself. These health ramifications make the need for a safer ADHD treatment drug all the more critical, and cannabidiol (CBD) presents a safe alternative.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol is one of the many naturally occurring chemical compound in the hemp plant, known as cannabinoids. These compounds stimulate a particular set of cellular membrane receptors known as cannabinoid receptors. Together, these receptors comprise a network known as the endocannabinoid system. The ECS is responsible for regulating vital body functions, including sleep, pain reception, mood, digestion, and more, and by stimulating its receptors with cannabinoids, it helps to bring these functions toward balance.

How Can CBD Help ADHD?

While there’s little direct research, the prospects of using CBD for ADHD look very promising. Nearly one-third of ADHD-diagnosed children are estimated to also suffer from anxiety. Stress can take a toll on your ability to concentrate, but when compounded with ADHD, the two will naturally exacerbate one another.

Anxiety is one of the most common reasons that people use CBD, and unlike ADHD, there is substantial evidence that it can mitigate the symptoms of anxiety. Several studies have been conducted on the effects of cannabinoids on ADHD, most suggesting a correlation between cannabinoid stimulation and symptom reduction. The science, whilst still in its relative infancy, poses an enormous potential for the future of ADHD treatment.

What’s The Best Way To Take CBD for ADHD?

Cannabidiol can be consumed in a variety of forms including topical application and sublingual consumption. There is no one “right” or “wrong” way to take it, but the consensus is that for the fastest relief, you should administer a few drops under the tongue around the sublingual mucous membranes, and hold them there for 30-90 seconds. Full Spectrum CBD with additional lipids, cannabinoids, and plant matter, is superior to CBD isolate, can be seamlessly, harmlessly mixed into any food or drink.

Does CBD for ADHD Have Risks?

There are no known risks of consuming CBD. However, there are a few steps you can take to ensure you’re buying a quality product and getting your money’s worth. Always ensure that you are purchasing CBD from a reliable distributor with third-party testing and no sketchy additives or extraction methods. Finally, CBD may interfere with the liver enzymes which fuel the metabolization of several prescription medications, so depending on what you or your children are currently taking, you may want to consult a general healthcare practitioner before trying CBD for your ADHD.
